We have been wanting to take the kids to the Smokies for a while now, and finally got around to doing it. Besides not seeming to have the time to get out there, we also struggled knowing what to do once we got there. The ages of our kiddos is not ideal for a day of hiking and just driving around is not ideal for little legs that want out. So a friend (thanks Joy!) suggested going to play in the streams at Cades Cove. We decided to try it out. First we stopped by the Foothills to check out the view. From there we headed to the picnic area at Cades Cove and brought a picnic lunch. We ate, the kids played in the stream, we looked for salamanders, and rocks for our collection. We then packed things up and decided to try a short hike on a wide trail off the picnic area. As we headed up, a few hikers warned us there was a mama bear and cub up the way on the trail. So we cut our hike short and headed home. But, on our way out, we found a one mile nature hike near the campground we would like to try out on our next trip.
